It wasn't a very healthy but an extremely common problem while handling mistakes or failures.
This habit can be hard to stop using because it can indeed help you to improve. And if you don't know what more positive alternatives you can replace it with then you may get stuck.
So what can you replace that habit with?
Step 1. Remember: If you want to do something of value in life then you will stumble.
If you want to go outside of your comfort zone, if you want to do things that really matter then you will stumble.
You will fail or make mistakes from time to time.
It has happened to everyone over the past thousands of years that wanted to do something of value.
So it is normal. And it is OK. Even though some people may try to convince you otherwise.
Step 2. Be your own best friend.
When you stumble or have a setback, ask yourself: How would my friend/parent support me and help me in this situation?
Then do things and talk to yourself like he or she would.
It will keep you from falling into a pit of negativity and help you to be more constructive with your time and energy.
Step 3. Look for one small step forward.
After you have reconnected with the self-kinder mindset ask yourself this:
What is one small step I can take right now to start solving or moving away from this situation and towards something better?
Then take that step forward. And then the next one.
